Honouring our UWI Graduates

PRESS RELEASE

Honouring our UWI Graduates

On behalf of the Board of Governors and the Council of Trustees of the Trinidad and Tobago Insurance Institute (TTII), we sincerely congratulate our UWI Graduates for the period 2019/20 and 2020 / 21 on their major milestone, and note that this is just the beginning of success. They are now the proud holders of the Bachelor of Science (BSc) Degree in Insurance and Risk Management.

The BSc programme, now in its 11th year of existence, commenced in the 2011/2012 academic year. The programme was the brainchild of the UWI and TTII’s members as they sought to develop a programme that would enhance the skillset of potential recruits and offer a rich and in-depth locally contextualised curriculum to provide a holistic understanding of the underpinnings of Insurance.

As the name suggests, the BSc Insurance and Risk Management also incorporates core management and economic courses within its scope, giving a more rounded education in business and insurance. To date, this programme has attracted students from within the insurance sector and beyond.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we are unable to host an in-person recognition ceremony. However, this tribute is for successful graduates for the period. This major milestone, given the challenges posed by this pandemic, required flexibility and endurance.

Special commendation must be given to graduates and most outstanding students, Shania Sookhai who achieved First Class Honours (2020/21) and Makada Charles who achieved Second Class Honours – Upper Division (2019/20). Well done to everyone.

TTII Launches eLearning Academy!

The Trinidad & Tobago Insurance Institute (TTII) has selected Agylia as its learning and continuing professional development (CPD) platform, to administer and manage CPD for insurance intermediaries in Trinidad and Tobago.

This signature move for the TTII, follows on the heels of the proclamation of the Insurance Act 2018 (as amended) on January 1st 2021. Under this legislation, intermediaries are required to complete a minimum of twelve CPD hours for each CPD year, in order to secure a renewal of their registration. The TTII was appointed by the Minister of Finance of Trinidad and Tobago as the approved educational institution that will be responsible for supervision and administration of CPD for all insurance intermediaries.

The TTII sets standards, promotes education and provides training to help enhance the professional knowledge, skills and competence of insurance intermediaries across the islands. Their primary objective being the ‘professionalisation of the local insurance industry’.

The Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago requires all insurance intermediaries to undertake and demonstrate annual CPD as part of its measures to improve standards of market conduct, following the introduction of the Insurance Act of 2018 and the Insurance (Amendment) Act, 2020, which came into effect on January 1 this year.

Carol Jaggernauth, Communication and Education Officer, at the TTII said, “To ensure compliance and to meet the demands of the new regulations, we have partnered with Agylia to deliver a truly modern and easy-to-use learning and CPD platform that will enable us to track, report and audit the CPD activities across the industry.”

“Throughout the selection and the implementation process, Agylia were patient and supportive, and we have received a universally positive response to the platform. I’m confident the Agylia Learning Management System  (LMS) will significantly improve our capability to enhance the crucial learning and professional development service we provide to members.”

The TTII will use the Agylia LMS to deliver a range of learning content, including eLearning courses, compliance training programmes, videos and workshops to its members.

The CPD platform will enable members to take ownership of their CPD records through the recording and tracking of CPD activities and the ability to add activities, evidence and reflections.

The LMS and CPD platforms will provide the TTII with greater insights and analytics on the learning and CPD activities of their members. The platform will also assist the Regulators with their audit of the CPD administration and management process to ensure that the required standards for CPD supervision are achieved and maintained by all stakeholders.

BSc Insurance and Risk Management

In 2010 TTII and the Department of Management Studies at The University of the West Indies (UWI), St. Augustine Campus signed a MOU to develop and offer a B.Sc. in Insurance and Risk Management to serve the needs of the insurance industry. Dr. Acolla Cameron, UWI’s Department Head, Management Studies, noted that UWI embraced the opportunity to provide advanced training and education in the field of insurance. The B.Sc. Insurance and Risk Management welcomed its first cohort of students in September 2012 with an intake of 30 students (15 males and 15 females). In 2013, the numbers increased to 14 males and 18 females. The first cohort is expected to graduate in 2015. Ms. Marlene Murray, no stranger to the insurance industry, has assumed the position of Full-Time Lecturer in the programme and provides academic oversight for the insurance and risk curriculum.

She ensures that the programme remains relevant to the needs of the industry. Marlene is joined by a group of specialists in various aspects of the insurance industry in the delivery of the programme. UWI is exploring the option of offering a number of its courses online to facilitate the work demands of the insurance professionals. Additionally, Management Studies plans to host a series of workshops in different areas of insurance management, beginning with a workshop on Insurance Accounting. Together TTII and The UWI will ensure that the needs of the industry are well served.
