Commercial Lines 2 – Business Interruption and Contractors All Risk Insurance

This intensive, practical workshop equips insurance professionals with the specialized knowledge needed to master two of the most complex segments in commercial underwriting and claims: Business Interruption (BI) and Contractors All Risk (CAR) insurance. Participants will gain an understanding of the mechanics of BI, learning how to accurately calculate gross profit, determine appropriate indemnity periods, and evaluate complex financial dependencies to protect a client’s bottom line after a disruption.

 

Shifting to physical assets, the session will break down CAR policies, analyzing coverage for project works, construction plant and machinery, and third-party liabilities, while highlighting common exclusions and risk assessment strategies. Through real-world case studies and interactive discussions, this workshop bridges the gap between technical policy wording and commercial reality, enabling underwriters, brokers, and claims adjusters to confidently structure, sell, and manage high-stakes commercial lines.

Learning Outcomes:   At the end of this session, participants will: · Understand the underwriting factors, principles and considerations in business interruption insurance · Understand the key policy coverage and gaps in cover for Business Interruption (learn the definition of Insurers Gross Profit, Dual Basis cover for Wages, Indemnity Periods and Rating and other applicable subject matters) · Understand waiting period, extension of coverage and policy exclusions (the application of the time deductible, enhancement or extensions of cover and policy exclusions) · Understand the underwriting factors, principles and considerations in Contractors All Risks Insurance · Understand the key policy coverage and gaps in cover for Contractors All Risk Insurance (determine the CAR Sum Insured, Public Liability considerations and limits and Rating the policies) · Understand Public Liability cover, Sub Contractor and Principal Coverage and policy exclusions (the benefits/gap in cover regarding public liability, contractor vs principal policies and policy exclusion in in the CAR policies)

Mr. Dookeran, a member of the TTII’s Board of Governors is a senior insurance practitioner for more than 20 years. He is currently an Executive Director of a leading brokerage firm and has honed his skills in underwriting in all classes of General Insurance Business. Navin is the holder of a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) from the Heriot Watt University, Advanced Diploma in Insurance (ACII) from the Chartered Insurance Institute London and an Associate in Risk Management (ARM) from the American Insurance Institute. He also attended the prestigious Alois Alzheimer Scholarship at Munich Re in Germany where he learned further insurance, reinsurance and business principles over the 6-month period. Mr. Dookeran is a part-time lecturer with the TTII, and has lectured at the University of the West Indies for the Insurance and Risk Management Degree Programme. He also conducts several in-house training programmes in all classes of General Insurance Business and has served as Chairman of the Underwriting Committee for the Association of Trinidad and Tobago Insurance Companies (ATTIC).
